A service through which clients work one-on-one with a trained and qualified therapist to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors to better understand themselves; and work through a wide variety of challenges, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. Clients identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, set personal goals, and work toward the desired change. The client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions, or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy.
Family counseling/therapy is a counseling service that involves all or most members of a family and, in some cases, members of the extended family (e.g., grandparents). The goal of family therapy is to help families with a variety of mental, emotional, psychological, behavioral, relational, and adjustment problems that impair and interfere with healthy family and social functioning. Therapists work towards improving family communication and conflict resolution skills, as well as helping family members understand and cope with family situations such as death, child and adolescent issues, step-family issues, and parenting issues.

Many people are familiar with what individual therapy is, but have never really been exposed to group therapy before. Group therapy brings people together who struggle with similar issues, like depression, anxiety, emotion regulation, eating disorders, and relationship/marital difficulties for example. It is a safe space for participants to connect and support each another, while learning beneficial skills from an experienced therapist. Group therapy is a preferred option for teens in particular. In many cases, it is more effective than individual therapy alone, and here’s why:
· The therapist is able to observe how teens interact with each other and pinpoint the teenager’s social difficulties as they happen.
· It helps improve teens’ interpersonal and communication skills giving them a safe space to practice their social skills, voice themselves and learn patience in listening, becoming non-judgemental and empathetic, and work through social obstacles in a supportive environment. With time, they are able to grow their social confidence.
· Teens benefit from connection and support; they are able to experience first hand relatability with each other’s experiences and be given the opportunity to both offer and receive guidance from both therapist and their peers. It’s possible that another group member went through a similar experience. Participants motivate each other to reach their goals and celebrate victories.
If your teen is exhibiting symptoms of stress, such as loss of sleep, poorer performance at school, aggressive behaviors/reactions, and general overwhelm OR are struggling with social or emotional issues, you should think about enrolling your child in group therapy. Group is an effective and beneficial option for many teens. Most importantly, they will be grateful to e part of a welcoming environment to express themselves.
